Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow

Now that its December we have dug out the snow. Magic imitation snow that is, this year we have two kinds. One is light & fluffy the other is cold and crystal like. The children loved making this science project as we measured out just the right amount of water to mix with the powder solution.
Then we had to wait for the magic to happen.......Ta-da the mystery magic snow appeared. We mixed up everything in the clear glass and watched as it the cup overflowed, making the liquid turn into a solid. We also discovered how it multiplied and became more as it poured over the sides and expanded. Then it was time to let each child hold a scoop of the magic powder in their hand as the teacher poured water in to their palm. Each child giggled as snow magically appeared. After each child had a turn making their own batch we took turns playing in it. I hope that I am able to bring the kids up to my moms house in Auburn (she has about 2 ft of snow in her yard)maybe next week so they can play in the real snow for a little bit and then head inside for some hot cocoa by the wood stove before we head back down the hill. We may be able to go over and help feed the horses if the roads are cleared by then.

Bouncing Around

Its definitely Winter time. I can't believe we had snow this week. The kids have been spending more time indoors and have invented games and pretend play. We have had increased music time the last few weeks using rhythm sticks, ribbons, songs and chants. This not only teaches the children music but rhythm, the ability to follow directions, leadership, and some physical movement.
Our newest song we love.
We're going to Kentucky
We're going to the fair
to see the senoritas
with diamonds in their hair
Shake it baby, shake it
Shake it if u can
Shake it like a milkshake
and drink it from a can
Rhumba to the the bottom
Rhumba to the top
Turn around and turn around
Until you holler "STOP"

The children love this one, you can even ask your child to teach you the words and movements it will be sure to leave you giggling at the end,
It is so wonderful when you can see the children learning from each other. The other day I caught the children having a band. They had a leader and were copying movements and following each other around.

They even added costumes to their marching band making up their own songs as they moved to their music.

Every Year I host a Parents night out as a thank you to my wonderful families. This year with having a new baby I have never been so tired as we are still not sleeping through the night. This year I am going to have to cancel this fun night and instead I have made a special gift for each family that I will be handing out soon. I hope you enjoy it as I have worked really hard on it and the children can't wait to gift it to you. I hope they have kept the secret from you so far.

Boost your childs Immune system

It is now cold and flu season! Nobody wants their child to be sick and have to miss work. Since younger children under four cannot get relief with cough and cold medicine. Try these tricks to boost your child's immunity:

Offer more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and veggies are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, and both of these natural nutrients boost the immune system. Antioxidants travel through the bloodstream and protect tissue from damage. They are like the anti-rust protection in an automobile, helping reduce the wear and tear on the engine. The less wear and tear on the body, the less susceptible it is to infection. Good immune-boosting fruits include strawberries, papaya, cantaloupe, guava, pink grapefruit, and blueberries. Good veggies are tomatoes, broccoli, and sweet potatoes, as well as soy products. When I see children in the office who are sick a lot, I prescribe Dr. Bill's immune-boosting smoothie: one cup of plain yogurt, one-half cup each of the above-mentioned fruits, a multivitamin / multimineral formula that contains at least ten milligrams of zinc (an immune booster), and a quarter cup of flaxseed meal. Mix these immune boosters in milk or juice. Also, feed your child lots of yellow vegetables, which contain carotenoids -- a natural substance that increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells (or "natural killer cells"). Yellow-orange fruits and dark green vegetables, such as apricots, carrots, pumpkin, kale, spinach, squash and mango, are also particularly healthful.

Feed your child immune-boosting fats. Omega 3 fats, particularly those found in coldwater fish (such as wild salmon) are valuable immune boosters and maintain the overall health of just about every organ of the body. They increase the activity of macrophages, the white cells that eat up bacteria. Grandmothers knew this fact years ago in the pre-antibiotic era when they prescribed that awful tasting cod liver oil. Feed your child at least three ounces of wild salmon three times a week. If coldwater fish is not available to you, give your child a high-quality fish oil capsule. One capsule a day (open the capsule and squirt it into juice or oatmeal) should be enough. Two or three teaspoons of flax oil a day is another immune-boosting source of omega 3 fats, but not as good as a seafood source.

Feed your child less sugar and other sweeteners. Studies have shown that drinking the equivalent of two and a half 12-ounce cans of soda can reduce the ability of immune-fighting white blood cells by 40 percent.

Keep your child lean. Obesity can depress the immune system by interfering with the ability of white blood cells to produce antibodies. Research shows that overweight babies get twice as many infections as lean babies.

Get your child moving. Exercise both increases the white blood cells' ability to fight off infection and increases the number of those killer cells mentioned above.

Lessen exposure to germs. If your child is in part- or full-time daycare, insist on careful hand washing when caregivers handle your infant. (Which we do!)As much as possible, keep your child away from those who are coughing and sneezing, especially other children.

Protect those precious lungs. Be vigilant in keeping your baby away from smokers. Smoking damages the protective lining of babies' immature respiratory passages, making them more susceptible to infection. Also, be sure your baby is up-to-date on all the necessary immunizations. As your child grows, so will his immature immune system. In the meantime, the above home remedies can help boost his immunity.

Germ Warfare
Wipe down the handle of your shopping cart, the doorknobs of public bathrooms, even your kid's menu (just think how many tots have licked the photo of that ice cream sundae).

Bring your own books, toys, or a portable video game to play with at the doctor's office. Yes, offices clean their toys, but the odds are huge that a sick kid had his hands on them not long before you arrived.

Use your own pen at the doctor's office, pharmacy, and checkout counter (adults carry germs, too!).

Spray down the bathroom with a household disinfectant such as Lysol or Clorox Clean-Up if a family member has been sick. Other germ magnets that could use a spritz: phones, remote controls, microwaves, and refrigerator door handles. You can also spray down toys at the end of the day -- once the disinfectant dries, it's no longer hazardous.

Try not to hug soiled linens close to you to avoid spreading germs from dirty laundry to your body. Wash your hands afterward.

Sanitize like crazy if you go to an indoor play space!

Winter Weather

Parents it is getting cold outside. We play outside each and everyday. Just a reminder to send your child dressed appropriately for the days weather. Bring a jacket and tennis type shoes. Croqs and sandals wont work as the children need to wear socks and they get wet when the grass is damp.

Children will need a new pair of winter boots for this winter as there feet have grown tremendously since last year. This allows children to have an outside pair of shoes and keep the pair of shoes clean that will go in your car and house later =)

Please check your childs spare cubby as I will need a complete set of clothes to include long sleeved shirt, pants, underwear and socks. I allow the children to jump in puddles, dig in the mud, and be kids. When children get wet/muddy I will need that spare pair of clothes to change them into.

August - Warning Lots of Pictures

Warning this post contains lots and lots of pictures. I have not updated in awhile and although I can make a million excuses I'll name just one, Landon. Being a mom is so cool though. Its been a fun month by I am looking forward to cooler weather next month. We are now back at The Little Gym on Thursday mornings. Preschool program has began again. The way the program is designed it will be hard to give out a monthly schedule of exactly what activity we will be doing daily. I will try to keep you updated on what we are learning about each month. And just in case you thought we may have been sitting around all month doing nothing =) I Just wanted to show off all the wonderful things your kids have done this month. We visited Livermore park where the kids enjoyed running back and forth in the little river with their boats and filling up their pails in the waterfall.
Emma worked on the value of numbers using the Montessori stairs using the unifex cubes

We all said goodbye to Tommy by having a bubble party and visiting the sand park.

Cole by accident got a hold of the spoon and fed himself. Although it was messy it was neat see him try his best at this new learning experience.

We wrote a letter to Joshua and told him how much we missed him. Then we made a trip to the post office to mail it. Hopefully he will mail us a letter back or even better come visit us.

We did a neat art project with magic paper. Invisible paper was a hit.

We felt for objects in the box and made guesses of what we thought they were with our new homes teacher Nikisha. It is much harder then you think to guess correctly.

In our water table we did messy and clean activities. Here we are washing baby dolls with washcloths and soap.

Our new friend Aidan turned 3 years old and shared cupcakes with us.

We made necklaces by sliding fruit loops onto strings. The is a good hand eye coordination as well as a fine motor activity. I'm not sure these necklaces even made them home. Most kids couldn't resist sneaking a few here and there from their necklace.

Here we are color matching and grouping them

Here's what I mean when I say we did a messy activity. We filled the table with about 40 pounds of coffee grounds and hid our rubber worms inside. This was a great sensory project as the classroom was filled with yummy coffee smells. One of the children said it reminded them of their grandmas house and her coffee.

We are still visiting the park on Wednesdays. The best part of the week is when the children get to play in the sand. Many local parks no longer have sand which is unfortunate as the children have a great time building and using their imaginations. Its never the same as they play differently each week with it.

We made our first page to our Alphabet book
A is for ... Ant

We practiced spelling Ant all by ourselves

Now on to September with more adventures to begin.
